FBI Says Cybercrime Profits Reached An All-Time High For Cyber-Criminals in 2019

Kanguru Blog: February 2020

FBI announces that in 2019, cyber-criminals stole about $3.5 billion dollars worth of profits from unsuspecting individuals and businesses in the U.S.The FBI announced this week that in 2019, cyber-criminals stole about $3.5 billion dollars worth of profits from unsuspecting individuals and businesses in the U.S., a trend that isn’t letting up anytime soon.

According to the infographic provided on the FBI website, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received 467,361 complaints in the U.S. in 2019, recording more than $3,500,000,000 in lost dollars to victims of cyber-criminals.  The staggering loss averaged about 1,300 complaints every day according to the FBI report.

The report indicates that email is still one of the most common points of entry criminals use, and they are getting more and more sophisticated, making it harder and harder for victims to recognize fake emails from the real thing.  Of particular concern is email spoofing. One trick among many is where a cyber-criminal sends an email to a human resource employee appearing to be from a familiar executive in the company requesting some sort of payment, wire transfer or a gift card purchase.  When the employee clicks on a link within the email, the transaction actually funnels funds directly to the criminal.  This could be done through fraudulent websites, tricky email addresses and links, or other deceptive tactics.
